WCSIT Minutes
Thursday, January 20, 2005

Respectfully submitted by Waylena McCully, secretary.

The 11:00 meeting was held in X150.
Seven were in attendance: Ann Blackman, Linda Crowley, Marlene Long, Waylena McCully, Karina Pavlova, Irene Tucker, and Nanci Withrow.

New t-shirts will be ordered sometime around March 1st. This way new members will be able to show their club spirit. Marlene is looking into a different color shirt as well, so member with the first shirt might also be interested.

The Vice President nominations are in! The nominees are Kasey Kerr, Carmen McCabe, and Karrie Rumsey. Voting is taking place by secret ballot until Monday, January 24th at NOON. Get your vote in to Ann Blackman (B116) by then.

Two new officer positions are being created within the club, Co-Secretary and Co-Treasurer. Among other duties, the co-secretary will coordinate schedules with the other secretary to take meeting minutes. The co-treasurer will be managing fundraising activities like pizza and other food sales. Watch your email for full descriptions of these positions from president Marlene Long.

So far, Nanci has been nominated for co-treasurer. If you want to nominate yourself or someone else for either of these positions, nominations will be accepted until Monday, January 31st. Votes will be due Thursday, February 3rd.

Once all positions have been filled, the club will be freed up to start planning site visits to high schools and other outreach programs to introduce more girls and young women to the opportunities of CSIT.

Upcoming pizza and food sales were discussed. The next sale is scheduled for Monday, January 31st. While pizza will dominate the offerings for the next few sales, alternatives are being considered, especially for later in the spring when the weather (hopefully) turns warmer. April 11th is tentatively scheduled for selling Subway sandwiches. If anyone has ideas for the April 6th food sale, get them to Marlene (mlong@stu.parkland.edu).

Treasurer Linda Crowley reports that our fundraisers this semester have brought in a total of $571.02, bringing our current account total to $721.02. Way to go to our fundraisers!

The most exciting news is a computer games design contest from ChicTech called the "Games 4 Girls Competition." From the brochure: teams of four or so college age women have approximately two months to create computer games specifically designed to be fun for middle or high school age women. There are cash prizes and an awards ceremony. Deadline for entry is February 14th, deadline for completed projects is March 13th. Ideas are already flowing for our club to get involved. Several members are already revving up their thinking caps and rearing to go.

For added inspirational incentive, Ann will try to schedule a talk by a local woman, an expert involved in the gaming industry. This would probably take place soon and on a weekday, with the preferred time being 5:00pm so everyone can make it to their 6:00pm classes. Exact time and date TBA.

Ann (B116) has brochures for the contest, and the contest website, http://G4G.cs.uiuc.edu should be operational soon. Marlene and Nanci are already thinking about getting together on Saturdays to work on this project, and Ann has offered to arrange access to computer labs during non-use hours.
